Episode 38 – Popsicle sticks and Bicycle frames.

In this episode we discuss why beams (and Popsicle sticks) bend and why bicycle frames are hollow. This is an easy and quick no-math episode that presents the forces determining the strength and rigidity of beams.

In episode 12 we talked about bending forces on beams and I used a popsicle stick as an example. I this episode I talk about why the stick bends and what can be done about it and why the tubing on a bicycle frame can be hollow.

In this picture my thumbs are applying an upward force while my index fingers are applying a downward force causing the stick to bend.
