This is the first of a new series of videos showing how to solve special drawing problems in CAD but more importantly also manually while laying out a project in sheet metal or some other material.  Today’s example is really three problems.
First, splitting a line exactly into two equal parts (bisecting).
Second, drawing a line exactly square, or perpendicular, or at a right angle, or orthogonal,  You can choose your term of choice.
Third, drawing the perpendicular line through a point on the reference line.

E-mail Problems:
Before going very far into the post I do want to make an announcement.  I have been having e-mail problems this week.  I reached a magic number on the number of e-mails sent per hour with my subscriptions.   I think with lots and lots of straining, learning, and some fussin’ and cussin’ I have implemented a “work-around”.   This post will be the true “smoke test”.  Should things not go the way I think they will, please be understanding while I go through the next iteration of fussin’ and cussin’.  I will get it right… eventually.

I learned my lesson… no more to-do lists of what I want to accomplish.  (Just joking… of course.)

In the YouTube video I show the CAD solving of the problem and with the CAD built in functions the problem is trivial.  I also show using CAD how to “do it the hard way”.  The “hard way” is the only option we have while using pencil and paper, or laying out metal, wood or some other material for construction.   I did not show in the video me actually doing the manual method so I took a few pictures to add to this blog post to make things clearer.

The problem I am solving in this example is drawing a line perpendicular to the bottom edge of the paper through the point shown with the red “V”. The first step is to find a point on either side of the point we want to draw the line through.   These points have to be the same distance from the point we are wanting to draw through.  The easiest way to find those points is to use a compass and draw arcs crossing the edge of the paper, our base line.

The second step is to spread the compass a little more and draw two arcs.  The center of the arcs will be the intersection of where the arcs crossed the baseline or in our case the edge of the paper.  The intersection of these two new arcs will be a point on our new line. Another point on the line will be the point where we wanted the line to pass through.  All we have to do now is use a straight-edge to draw between the two points as shown on the first picture of this post.

I used the inexpensive compass that can be purchased at almost any store selling office or school supplies.  For more accurate and detailed work you may consider special purpose “dividers” and compasses designed for the purpose.   (Besides – I kind of like the pink color.)
