Tonight’s post is another one on the subject of simple but very very useful mathematics and geometry.  The right triangle can seen almost everywhere in the man-made world.  Almost everything is build with straight lines usually running horizontally and vertically.  Together those would from rectangles, but a rectangle is inherently weak.  To strengthen the rectangle often a brace is added and that forms a triangle.    (Refer to my previous post Episode 19 – Fundamentals of Bracing) .

The right triangle is very useful because there is a formula that determines the relationship of the length of the three sides.  That formula is called the Pythagorean Theorem.   This is commonly used to help “square up” (making perpendicular) the sides of structures by a common use of this relationship using the numbers 3, 4 and 5. (See my previous post Episode 5 – Making things square.)


The Pythagorean Theorem

The second thing I talk about in this video is the ability to scale up or down a right triangle and the ratios of the sides remain the same.  In other words, if the hypotenuse is doubles, then the length of the other sides will be doubled.   This ability to scale will become very important in the next video.  (Refer to another previous post: Episode 24 – Ratio and Proportion and Right Triangles.)

The final thing we got accomplished in this video is the ability to determine the length of the “as the bird flys” arrow for our direct vector.   We still do not know how to describe the direction of the vector, but that is coming soon.
